Big Blue to Buy Object Storage System Company Cleversafe
IBM – often referred to as “Big Blue” – plans to buy object storage system startup company Cleversafe Incorporated (Cleversafe). Cleversafe, which has headquarters in Chicago, USA, bills itself as having “reinvented storage at petabyte scale and beyond to deliver unprecedented results”. Its solutions enable businesses to efficiently store and administer huge amounts of data and manage “data-intensive workloads delivered via the cloud”. The company employs around 210 people and, should regulatory clearances be successfully addressed, the company and its staff will be absorbed by the IBM Cloud business unit.

Established in 2004, Cleversafe has around 350 object-based, on-premise storage solutions patented. These solutions allow its customers to “scale to exabytes of storage, or billions of gigabytes” and address the issue of unstructured data in the form of images, audio, and video. Cleversafe’s offerings enable companies to decide the level of on-site and cloud storage they wish to utilize. IBM’s acquisition of the company will enable its customers to address increasing levels of unstructured data with “scalable object-based storage solutions for on-premise and hybrid cloud environments”. Financial aspects of the deal were not released, but it was announced that Cleversafe’s technology would become a “foundational content repository and data archive” for IBM SoftLayer’s cloud services and its Platform-as-a-Service, IBM Bluemix.

"Today a massive digital transformation is underway as organizations increasingly turn to cloud computing for innovative ways to manage more complex business operations and increasing volumes of data in a secure and effective way,” explained IBM Cloud’s Senior Vice President, Robert LeBlanc. “Cleversafe, a pioneer in object storage, will add to our efforts to help clients overcome these challenges by extending and strengthening our cloud storage strategy, as well as our portfolio.”
