Big Blue to Open Data Center at Research Triangle Park
IBM - often referred to as "Big Blue" - is to open a new 'cloud' data center at its campus in Research Triangle Park (RTP). RTP is a "research park" located in North Carolina near Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill.

In 2008, RTP became one of the first cloud-based data centers and IBM already has a customer (Monitise) at its campus. The 72,000-square-foot "Cloud Resiliency Center" offers a kitchen, lounge, showers and conference rooms alongside other amenities. The center will help the corporation extend its reach in the disaster recovery and business continuity segments of the cloud market.

“The work we’re doing with Monitise at this new cloud resiliency center is a strong testament to IBM partnerships with enterprise clients to drive new innovation,” explained IBM Business Continuity and Resiliency Services Vice President Mike Errity on the corporation's website. “By creating a new benchmark for delivering client continuity services in hybrid, public and private cloud environments, we meet the demands of businesses required to serve the around the clock needs of their clients.”

IBM employs around 7,500 staff at RTP and already caters to around 12,000 customers from the campus. Around 2,000 of its staff there are involved in disaster recovery and business continuity activity. In 2015 the corporation is expected to generate $32 billion from these segments.
