The UK city of Bristol in the South West of England has been chosen as the European headquarters of cloud company Oracle’s expanded ‘Oracle Cloud Start-up Accelerator Program’. The US multinational, which has headquarters in Redwood City, California, United States, announced the expansion of its program last week. Its mentorship will now reach far beyond the US, to Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
Oracle was established in 1997 and is one of the internet’s originals. A global player, the company has around 135,000 staff around the world. The choice of Bristol for the headquarters of its new activity is a considerable boon to the region’s IT industry. The company’s research and development staff will run the incubator, which will be located at the ‘Engine Shed’ - an organization involved in incubating local companies which was “created to generate and encourage innovation through collaboration and networks”. Startups chosen for the scheme will receive six months’ mentoring from Oracle’s experts and receive assistance with technology through free Oracle Cloud credits. Ten Bristol technology companies will be involved in the initial intake.
“You come to Bristol and we are an opportunity to reach out to the whole world," explained Marvin Rees, the Mayor of Bristol, in a statement. “You should tap into the diversity in our community, in a sector that needs creativity to identify new challenges. Bristol offers you the population to exploit that diversity," he added
