British internet service provider (ISP) WebMate
has announced it is now offering 100% carbon neutral web hosting services. WebMate has headquarters in Cornwall, United Kingdom, an office in New York, United States, and “infrastructure in both the UK and US”. The company has been in the web hosting industry for over two decades and offers a broad range of services. The award-winning company’s move is the endpoint in a two-year drive away from fossil fuel-based energy.
The company has a presence at three data centers across the UK, and has taken a number of measures to reduce its carbon footprint. These include upgrading servers to use SSD hard drives and leveraging more efficient heating and cooling at its offices and centers. The measures also extended to fitting LED lighting onsite. It gets 30% of the energy it uses from renewable sources and buys carbon credits to further reduce its carbon footprint. These credits go towards projects like planting trees and developing hydro electric projects around the world.
WebMate’s products and services include a “super easy website builder”, WordPress and cPanel hosting options, and email hosting and cloud storage services. Its hosting options start at only £4 ($5.33) per month. The company also has web design, SSL Certificates and VOIP offerings. Do you know of any other companies going green? Let us know the details.
