Cloud Giant Google Acquires Big Data Solutions Provider Cask Data
Cloud giant Google has acquired ‘Big Data’ solutions provider Cask Data Inc. (Cask). With headquarters in Mountain View, California, United States, Google is an Alphabet Inc. company. The ‘Google Cloud Platform’ offers a range of cloud services including Google App Engine, Google Compute Engine, Google Cloud Datastore, Google Cloud Storage, Google BigQuery, and Google Cloud SQL. The company’s acquisition of Cask Data is intended to enhance its cloud capabilities.

Cask has headquarters on Palo Alto, California, United States, but is also recognized as being an Israeli company. Established in 2011, the company is still in startup mode. It utilizes a proprietary Cask Data Application Platform (CDAP) – which it calls “the first unified integration platform for Big Data” – to simplify building and running Big Data solutions either in the cloud, in a hybrid environment, or on-premise. CDAP “reduces the time from prep to production for data lakes and data applications by 80%, empowering the business to make better decisions faster”. Cask also offers tools for the Open Source Hadoop analytics framework.

Cask is supported by a number of investors including Safeguard Scientifics, Battery Ventures, Ignition Partners and Andreessen Horowitz. Its customers include Google and other big names like AT&T, AWS, Cloudera, Ericsson, IBM, and Microsoft. “As early adopters and users of Google Cloud ourselves, Cask has tremendous respect for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) technology and its commitment to open source, developers and enterprises,” added Jonathan Gray and Nitin Motgi. “We believe the combination of CDAP and GCP will provide compelling solutions for enterprise developers, bringing them new levels of accessibility, performance and scale.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome the talented Cask team to Google Cloud, and are excited to work together to help make developers more productive with our data processing services both in the cloud and on-premise. We are committed to open source and look forward to driving the CDAP project’s growth within the broader developer community,” explained Group Product Manager, Google Cloud, William Vambenepe.
