Cloud Giant Google Opens New Australian Office
Cloud giant Google has opened a new office in Australia. The new office, which has space for 100 desks, is in Melbourne in the southeastern Australian state of Victoria. Located on Collins Street, it is situated in the heart of Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD) and features workspaces with names such as ‘The ‘G’ and ‘Yarra Valley’ – key landmarks in the Melbourne area. The move is intended to address demand for Google services in Australia, and underscores its commitment to the region.

Around 200,000 businesses in the State of Victoria utilize Google’s search and business tools to promote themselves to local businesses and businesses throughout Australia and the rest of the world. Google’s new office was opened by Philip Dalidakis MP, Victoria’s Minister for Small Business; Innovation and the Digital Economy; Trade and Investment. Mr. Dalidakis summoned the Google Assistant to open the new premises, using the phrase: “OK Google, open the Google Melbourne office”.

“It’s no surprise to see Google further investing in its Victorian office as we have incredible talent in the tech sector and produce the largest number of tech grads across Australia,” suggested Mr. Dalidakis. “We’re working hard to retain our number one tech city ranking in Australia – we believe Google has both a bright future here and a strong part to play in delivering strong job growth.”

“The new Melbourne office demonstrates our long-term commitment to businesses and partners in Victoria,” added Sean McDonell, Google Melbourne’s site leader. “We’re delighted to have a growing office hub here in Melbourne – from just four people when we began a few years ago, to more than 100 desks in the Google Melbourne office today.”

Google has country headquarters in Sydney, Australia where it employs 1,500 people. News of the new office comes against a backdrop of Google initially choosing White Bay Power Station in Sydney as its regional headquarter in April of last year, and then changing its mind. The decision potentially cost the city 10,000 new jobs.
