Microsoft has acquired Deis from San Francisco, California-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) company Engine Yard. Microsoft, which has headquarters in Redmond, Washington, United States, aims to attract developers to the Deis platform which offers tools for adding applications to containers running on single physical servers. Financial aspects of the deal were not released.
Containers make it easier to build applications and put them in the cloud. They facilitate virtualized environments by deploying software code in isolated in process zones. Containers also control Operating System (OS) requirements for specific tasks to maintain optimal performance. With the Deis acquisition, Microsoft aims to make Azure the best platform for app development. Deis offers Open Source (OS) tools including ‘Workflow’ and ‘Helm’ that manage ‘Kubernetes’ – a system originally developed by Google that manages containerized applications in a clustered environment.
