Cloudant DBaaS Service Now Available on the Joyent Cloud Platform
Boston-based database-as-a-service (DBaaS) company Cloudant has announced its service is now available through the highly scalable SmartOS-based Joyent cloud platform. The two companies are making a new multi-tenant Cloudant cluster available through the Joyent East Coast data center, while dedicated Cloudant clusters will become available through each of Joyent's data centers later in the month.

Cloudant is now able to utilize the tracing framework and troubleshooting features of ofDTrace in the Joyent public cloud. This offers global system performance insights that will enable both companies to provide increased application performance to customers.

Backed by investors that include Avalon Ventures, In-Q-Tel, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, and Y Combinator, Cloudant provides a fully scalable managed DBaaS service which enables developers to avoid delays and reduce costs when working with databases. The system frees developers from data management rigors and allows them to concentrate on their core competencies, reducing time-to-market and time-to-innovation. Joyent offers public and hybrid cloud solutions to large and small business customers through a cloud service purpose-built to support modern applications. The move to Joyent's public cloud is an extension of the companies' April 2012 partnership which made Cloudant's NoSQL DBaaS available on Joyent.

“Collaborating with Joyent to run Cloudant on Joyent’s SmartOS is just another example of how we efficiently improve service,” explained Cloudant's Chief Product Officer and co-founder Alan Hoffman. “Making sure operational data scales flawlessly with application code is challenging, which is why when we see technology that helps our customers, we start integrating it. Now, with Joyent, we’re able to quickly provision Cloudant accounts across the global network of Joyent data centers.”

“We built the Joyent public cloud to power real-time Web, social and mobile applications, so it makes sense to have a DBaaS partner like Cloudant that’s geared toward operational application data,” added Joyent's CTO and founder Jason Hoffman. “Giving Cloudant the ability to quickly deploy throughout the global environment of our public cloud service aligns with our focus on scalability and performance. That’s what our customers care about most: low cost, real-time systems that are easy to use.”
