Computer Storage and Data Management Company NetApp Announces Acquisition of Flash Storage Provider SolidFire
Computer storage and data management company NetApp has announced its intention to acquire Flash storage provider SolidFire. NetApp, which has headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, United States, was established in 2012. A Fortune 500 company, NetApp’s products and services extend to hybrid storage solutions, disk shelves and storage media, backup and recovery solutions, and “Big Data” options. The company also offers a number of Microsoft solutions and cloud storage solutions. NetApp has signed a “definitive agreement” to acquire SolidFire in a deal that will cost the company $870 million in a cash payment.

Established in 2010, SolidFire has headquarters in Boulder, Colorado, United States. The company bills itself as “the all-flash array for the next generation data center” and it is regarded as a market leader in all-flash data center storage systems. The company offers a wide range of storage system options alongside a large number of cloud orchestration, database, VDI, VMware and data protection solutions.

The acquisition enhances NetApp’s ability to address the “all-Flash array” market segments. SolidFire products will be absorbed by NetApp’s infrastructure enabling the company to offer “seamless data management across flash, disk and cloud resources”. The deal will be completed in the fourth quarter of the 2016 fiscal year. Dave Wright, SolidFire’s CEO, will continue to lead SolidFire activity in the post-acquisition period.

“This acquisition will benefit current and future customers looking to gain the benefits of webscale cloud providers for their own data centers,” explained NetApp’s Chief Executive Officer, George Kurian. “SolidFire combines the performance and economics of all-flash storage with a webscale architecture that radically simplifies data center operations and enables rapid deployments of new applications. We look forward to extending NetApp’s flash leadership with the SolidFire team, products and partner ecosystem, and to accelerating flash adoption through NetApp’s large partner and customer base.”

“Both SolidFire and NetApp have deep technical, customer-centric cultures, which are focused on delivering innovations that give customers a competitive advantage,” added Dave Wright. “We look forward to enhancing NetApp’s position within the all-flash array market while helping NetApp and SolidFire customers and partners succeed.”
