Established in 1992, it is a voluntary scheme which is part of the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Companies that are certified can display a blue mark which indicates that its products and services offer environmental benefits and ‘superior energy efficiency’. Data centers that are ENERGY STAR certified perform “in the top 25 percent of buildings nationwide, based on weather-normalized source energy”.
