Data center company
Equinix, Inc. (Equinix) has announced the launch of a new data center in Australia. Based in Redwood City, California, United States, Equinix’s products and services focus on customers who wish to hasten their IT and cloud strategies. The company offers cloud, colocation, data security services and interconnection options through its global interconnection platform made available by a network of carrier-neutral data centers. The company was in the news earlier this year for opening a center in the South Korean capital, Seoul. Equinix’s latest facility will be located in Sydney, Australia.
Equinix’s new International Business Exchange (IBX) data center facility will be named ‘SY5’. Located in Alexandria, around 2.5 miles from Sydney center, the facility will offer 25,000 square meters of colocation space when completed. It then will be Equinix’s 16th IBX data center in Australia, its eighth in Sydney, and underscore Equinix's leadership in the Australian market. In the last three years, Equinix has invested more than $800 million in expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, and now has 40 IBX data centers across 12 regional markets.
The first phase of the facility will open in the third quarter of 2019 at a cost of $160 million. The center will initially offer 1,825 cabinets. When finished it will offer 9,225 cabinets and be the company’s largest in Australia. SY5 IBX will “benefit from direct fiber cross connect capability between the SY1, SY2, SY3 and SY4 IBX data centers with the richest ecosystem of customers in Australia, including over 155 network service providers (NSP), 265 cloud and IT service providers”.
"The rise in the uptake of technologies such as analytics, IoT, cloud and 5G coming to fruition in Australia are built to leverage digital edge interconnections,” explained Samuel Lee, President, Equinix Asia-Pacific. Customer expectations will be high in terms of immediate availability of services, data and information with low latency. Edge computing architecture represents this next phase of IT transformation, and Equinix is at the forefront of this opportunity."
