Equinix, Inc. (Equinix) has entered into a joint venture with Oman-based Omantel. Equinix has global headquarters in Redwood City, California, United States. The company operates globally and has a ‘carrier-neutral’ data center network which provides a range of enterprise solutions and cloud options. Its joint venture with Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) will see the organizations work together on building a new Equinix data center in Oman. The move is a response to the growth in service requirements in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Omantel, which has headquarters in Muscat, the capital of Oman, was established in 1970. The company is “the pioneer of total communications solutions in the Sultanate of Oman” offering a broad spectrum of telecommunications solutions. Together the company and Equinix will “establish the first world-class, carrier-neutral hub in Oman”. Carriers and cloud providers will be able to colocate IT infrastructure in the facility. The agreement will see Equinix and Omantel fund the project, each having a 50% shareholding. The partnership was finalized at a signing ceremony on July 2, 2018.
"We see significant potential for Oman as a market generally and, in particular, supporting CLS requirements as subsea cable momentum accelerates,” explained Equinix’s President, EMEA, Eric Schwartz. “It's all about meeting the growing need for interconnection – private data exchange between businesses. In the digital age, companies need to reach everywhere, interconnect everyone and integrate everything, and they need to do it out at the digital edge, where commerce, population centers and digital ecosystems meet. Our joint venture with Omantel will do exactly that."
