Data Center Company Equinix Signs Power Purchase Agreement with SunEdison
Data center company Equinix, Inc. (Equinix) has signed a power purchase agreement with global renewable energy company SunEdison, Inc. (SunEdison). Equinix, which has headquarters in Redwood City, California, United States, operates data centers in cities across the United States including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, Silicon Valley and Washington D.C. The company has a global presence and offers a range of products and services including cloud, data center, colocation, and infrastructure options. The agreement was spurred by Equinix’s commitment to making its data centers in California “100% renewable”.

SunEdison, which has headquarters in Belmont, California, USA, will provide 105 megawatts (MWAC) of solar power to Equinix through a project named the Mount Signal Solar II project. Alongside its headquarters, the agreement will address the needs of all Equinix’s California-based centers, including 11 centers in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley. The move brings Equinix’’s profile from 30% to 43% renewable energy usage worldwide. Mount Signal Solar II will generate 300,000 MWh per year to offset Equinix’s carbon fuel-based power consumption. It will bring Equinix’s carbon footprint down “by over 180 million lbs of CO2 annually”. The move is in line with the company’s commitment to make all of its data centers “100 percent clean and renewable”.

The news comes as Equinix announced its partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Corporate Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles – a set of guidelines designed to establish “easier access to, cost competitiveness of, and increased grid use of renewable energy sources”. The company has also joined the Rocky Mountain Institute’s Business Renewables Center (BRC), of which SunEdison is a founding project developer.
