DDoS Attacks on the Increase
Distributed Denial of Service (or DDoS) attacks are on the increase, recent research by DDoS-GUARD suggests. DDoS-GUARD, which is located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, bills itself as “one of the leading companies” in the DDoS protection market. It offers a geo-distributed infranet that allows it to protect customers with solutions that filter “more than 1.5Tb per second of attacking traffic” and enable it to manage “powerful and sophisticated attacks from giant bot nets”. The company’s research suggests that DDoS attacks are up 30% in the 3rd quarter of 2015 based on the same period last year.

DDoS-GUARD’s distributed traffic filtering services consist of high-performance clusters located in the Netherlands and Germany. It receives and analyses traffic from TIER1 level operators such as Level3, TiNET, TTK, and RETN and some of the largest local telecom operators. The company suggests its filtration system encountered around 130 attacks on a daily basis during the period. The number of attacks of over 100 Gbps also increased by 29%, while there were 7 attacks of more than 200 Gbps.

According to the company, DDoS attacks have also become more “sophisticated and powerful” in nature, with attacks being sent from dedicated servers. However, being driven by dedicated servers, attacks cannot be sustained, with the most serious attack in the period exceeding 220 Gbps, but only lasting 15 minutes.

DDoS-Guard’s analysis of the DDoS situation is that while duration times will decrease, the number of attacks is set to grow. DDoS-Guard suggests that the highest number of attacks is likely to occur around Christmas, with web hosts being particularly at risk. To help counter the risk, the company is planning to extend its services to North America and Asia in the near future.
