The
Deltalis RadixCloud Data Center has been nominated for DatacenterDynamics EMEA 2012 Awards to be held in front of over 600 industry professionals at the Lancaster Hotel on 13 December 2012. The awards recognize innovation, leadership and ‘out of the box’ thinking in the data center industry across the Europe, the Middle East and Africa region. Not surprisingly, Deltalis’ data center reached the finals of the awards under the ‘Most Extreme Data Center Deployment’ category.
The Deltalis RadixCloud Data Center is built deep inside a mountain in the Swiss Alps near the Swiss Gotthard Massif. It is located in a space formerly used as the Swiss Air Force Command and Control Center. Not surprisingly, given its location and its history, the data center - a Tier IV colocation facility - offers Deltalis customers military standard secure colocation opportunities.
The data center is built in a vast subterranean space occupied by a number of large buildings situated directly in the mountain granite and the center’s colocation facilities were created in rooms with vaulted ceilings. The center was facilitated by Minkels, a data center supplier which is part of the Legrand Group. The company took a modular approach to equipping such a difficult location, customizing standard center features to ensure cloud computing and virtualization flexibility and scalability.
Alongside security, Deltalis’ location gives it several advantages as far as Green IT in concerned – the design of the center focuses on stringent energy-efficiency goals and innovative green data center operating principles. For example, it uses glacier water as a natural cooling resource.
“The modularity and energy-efficiency of Minkels’ solutions fully matched our detailed and location specific requirements,” explained Deltalis Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Michael Imfeld. “Modularity in the data center solutions being offered, together with Minkels’ approach to fully customize its solutions on top of that, helped us to create a maximum of efficiency in our data center infrastructure. The infrastructure now connects seamlessly with the capricious cave-like environment.”
