Ericsson Report Suggests Changes in Smartphone and Mobile Phone Usage
A new report compiled by Ericsson has suggested radical changes in how smartphones and mobile phones could be used in the future and these changes might have a number of implications for the web hosting industry.

Ericsson is a Swedish corporation and a global brand that provides communications technology solutions and services. It has produced a biannual assessment of world smartphone and mobile phone usage since live networks began. The report is recognized as being a blueprint for future changes within the industry.

Ericsson’s latest report suggests a mobile data traffic increase of 100% over the next five years, indicating handsets will become less used for phone calls, but more used for viewing video and other bandwidth intensive mediums such as audio streaming.

The report also suggests that calls made on mobile devices will peak in 2015, but will then experience a steady decline. The report also expects that by 2019 “voice traffic” will revert to the same levels experienced in 2019. The data in the report also suggests that calls made through traditional mobile phone networks (run by telecom operators) will decline and that calls through cloud-based communications options like Line, Skype and Viber (which offer free user-to-user calls) will rise dramatically. It is interesting to note that at its 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple recently announced changes to its iOS 8 and iCloud services that will emphasise user-to-user cloud-based communication that bypasses telecoms.

The report goes on to suggest that by 2019 mobile data consumption for video will eclipse all other types of data usage, and it goes on to suggest that the future of the mobile phone is as a “video-recording and viewing device”. “All regions are showing continued growth in mobile subscriptions. In Asia Pacific, this is driven by new subscribers. In more mature markets, such as North America and Western Europe, the growth comes from the increasing number of subscriptions per individual – for example, many have recently added a tablet to their device setup,” explained the report.
