May 17, 2005 - (HOSTSEARCH.COM) - Tech industry analyst Gartner today released their analysis of Microsofts new operating system designed to run on older PCs without many of the security flaws found in 9x and NT. Code-named Eiger, the OS is a light-weight version of Windows XP. Eiger will use the same security updates and service packs as Windows XP.
The new XP-light OS requires 300MB of disk space, a 233MHz Pentium II processor and 128MB of RAM.
Gartner reports, Eiger's leanness offers less "surface area" for potential security holes, reducing its TCO compared with that of a traditional fat client. The system will be significantly more locked-down than full Windows XP.
