Google Cloud has acquired cloud-based file storage provider
Elastifile. The move is one of a number of acquisitions that have taken place since Thomas Kurian took over as CEO from Diane Greene in November 2018. The former President of Product Development at Oracle, Kurian’s acquisitions have included the $2.6 billion acquisition of Looker. The Elastifile acquisition is intended to enhance Google Cloud’s ‘Cloud Filestore’ file storage solution.
Elastifile has headquarters in Santa Clara, California, United States, alongside offices and facilities in Herzliya, Israel. Established in 2013, the company “helps organizations adapt and accelerate their business in the cloud era”. Its services include ‘ClearTier’ - a solution which tiers files and object storage. The “dynamically scalable, enterprise-grade distributed file system” is already a fully native Google Cloud service. It offers intelligent object tiering in a cross-cloud data fabric, allowing companies to utilize the cloud to optimize workflows. Elastifile has been supported by a number of venture partners and big names like Western Digital and Dell EMC. Google intends to fully integrate Elastifile and Cloud Filestore.
“Elastifile is a pioneer in solving the challenges associated with file storage for enterprise-grade applications running at scale in the cloud,” explained Thomas Kurian in a blog post. “They’ve built a unique software-defined approach to managed Network Attached Storage (NAS), enabling organizations to scale performance or capacity without cumbersome overhead. Building on this technology, our teams are excited to join together and integrate Elastifile with Google Cloud Filestore”.
"Helping our customers solve difficult storage challenges for their most critical workloads has enabled these enterprises to unleash the full benefits of the cloud,” added Elastifile’s CEO Erwan Menard in the same post. “We’re excited to join Google for the next part of our journey, building on the success we’ve had together over the past two and a half years. File storage is essential to enterprise cloud adoption and, together with Google, we are well-positioned to serve those needs."
