Google Generates $50.5 Billion in Advertising Revenue
Search giant Google has generated $50.5 billion in advertising revenue for the financial year 2013-2014. The amount puts the company in pole position as far as earnings are concerned, with Walt Disney Company in second place at $20.3 billion. The prevalence of advertising through mobile devices (mobile phones, phablets, tablets, etc.) has allowed Google maintain its lead position and its revenue has increased 16% over the period.

Google's good fortune was highlighted by a report produced by ZenithOptimedia. The report, which is released on an annual basis, lists the top 30 media businesses in order of revenue. As well as web search, the list includes companies that generate revenue via social media, television, and more traditional publishing companies (newspapers, magazines, etc.).

While the mobile revolution has been a great benefit to Google, it has also helped Facebook enjoy considerable growth. While Facebook's $7 billion is dwarfed by Google's income, it is the company that has seen the most significant growth - 63% over the period. ZenithOptimedia suggests that 25% of sales via mobile devices were generated by Facebook.

“Google has benefited from the rising sales of smartphones and tablets, making its central search function available to consumers on the move, allowing them to view content at times and places most convenient for them,” the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper quoted the report as saying. “But the main beneficiary of the transition to mobile has been Facebook. It has actively embraced mobile technology in order to encourage its users to visit it regularly and frequently throughout the day, while designing its ads to blend seamlessly into the content feed.”
