EnCirca has announced it is accepting pre-registration for ‘.eth’ domain names. SOC 2-certified EnCirca, which has headquarters in Woburn, Massachusetts, United States, was established in 2001. The company specializes in domain name and trademark protection services. It supports the full range of ‘generic top-level domain extensions’ and the majority of ‘country-code top-level domain extensions’. EnCirca also offers ‘TM.Biz - a “workflow-based tool for trademark professionals to search, watch and reserve usernames on social media”. The company has become the first provider to offer applications for ‘.eth’ domain names. The application deadline is August 10, 2019.
‘.eth’ domain names are provided by ‘Ethereum’, an “open-source platform for decentralized applications” which is also well-known as a ‘cryptocurrency’. Ethereum “is the world's second largest blockchain” with ‘Bitcoin’ being the first. ‘.eth’ domains are “not regulated like .COM or .ORG domain names” as they are mapped to blockchain wallets. The ‘Ethereum Naming Service’ permits short character ‘.eth’ domains with 3 to 6 characters, or long character ‘.eth’ domains with 7 characters or more.
"Billions of internet users will soon have blockchain wallets for sending and receiving crypto-currencies", explained EnCirca’s President, Tom Barrett. "In response, EnCirca has made it easy for brand owners to protect their trademarks on the blockchain." Domain names will be allocated to owners of pre-existing domains that might include ‘.com’, ‘.net’, ‘.org’ and other suffixes. Around 300,000 names have been registered to date.
