Symantec has launched a cloud protection offering. The company, which was founded in 1982 and has headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, USA, bills itself as a company that caters to "people, businesses and governments seeking the freedom to unlock the opportunities technology brings -- anytime, anywhere". A Fortune 500 company, it caters to a global customer base (including other Fortune 500 companies) and generated $6.5 billion in revenue in 2014/5. The company's new Data Loss Prevention (DLP) 14 solution protects data stored in the cloud from loss or theft.
DLP 14 provides email protection to Microsoft Office 365 cloud-based email users by allowing them to apply the information protection policies they would on their premises. In addition, the solution protects files stored in the cloud and makes visible the files that a company's staff collaborate on. Symantec DLP also monitors the Box platform to analyze how sensitive information is used and shared. It also prevents users from syncing sensitive files to personal accounts such as Box, Microsoft OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive and Dropbox.
“Symantec Data Loss Prevention is a content-aware security technology that helps companies understand where their sensitive corporate information is being stored, how it’s being used and how to protect it against loss and theft,” explained Symantec's Senior Vice President, Product Development, Amit Jasuja. “With the latest release, we are extending DLP to cloud email and storage to provide our customers the control and visibility they need to secure their sensitive information as they take full advantage of the cloud. We’ve also announced a new, robust integration with Box, as it’s one of the top requests we’ve seen from our DLP customers.”
