Intel Features RES Virtual Desktop Extender in Cloud Builders Program

August 24, 2011
August 24, 2011 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – RES Software, the proven leader in dynamic desktop solutions, yesterday announced the company’s collaboration with Intel’s Intelligent Desktop Virtualization initiatives as well as its Cloud Builders program. The announcement follows the company’s participation at Intel’s Day in the Cloud event and a published reference architecture that highlights the ability of RES Virtual Desktop Extender (VDX) to address challenges associated with deploying cloud-based virtual desktop infrastructure.

As more companies look to the cloud for hosted desktop solutions, it’s become increasingly clear that one size does not fit all when considering enterprise client computing architectures. With hosted desktops, the user experience is often compromised because of network bandwidth and latency challenges that could be avoided by utilizing the local computing resources of an intelligent PC. RES VDX offers a balanced solution for delivering an uncompromised user experience in VDI deployments, with some applications and services running on the PC and others in the datacenter. The newly published reference architecture highlights test results of VDX running on PCs with Intel Core processors and demonstrates clear performance benefits over a datacenter-only approach.

RES Virtual Desktop Extender (VDX) gives desktop administrators the unique ability to enhance remotely hosted virtual desktops with applications and services that run locally on the PC, making use of the underlying processing power, graphic capabilities and peripherals of the PC. Using VDX, local applications and services are seamlessly displayed in remote virtual desktops. The solution enables IT to deliver a single workspace for end-users while optimizing local computing resources on a per application basis. In addition to better performance, end-users also experience increased productivity, as they no longer need to toggle between their virtual sessions and local desktops.

At Intel’s Day in the Cloud Belgium event, RES Software CTO Bob Janssen demonstrated how VDX enhances Intel Intelligent Clients. Jeff Fisher, VP Business Development at RES Software commented, “While cloud-based solutions are still growing and adapting to the needs of today’s demanding users, a wholesale move to a cloud-hosted desktop environment is impractical, especially because it ignores increasingly capable rich PCs. Solutions like RES VDX enable organizations to run suitable applications and services on cloud-hosted desktops and others on intelligent PCs so they can achieve increased manageability and flexibility without compromising performance and the user experience. Combining RES Software with Intel’s Intelligent Desktop Virtualization framework provides IT departments with a hybrid model for desktop delivery, automation and management.”

“RES VDX is a clear example of how balanced investment in cloud-based virtual desktops and in intelligent clients powered by second generation Intel Core vPro processors enables enterprises to achieve maximum benefits,” said Dr. Chuck Brown, director of the Intel Emerging Compute Laboratory. “Merging the advantages of centralized management with the compelling capabilities and performance of an intelligent PC ensures the best IT efficiency and user experience.”

VDX runs either as a standalone solution or integrated with RES Workspace Manager, which adds powerful capabilities for IT configuration and compliance, personalization management and user-level security.
