Internet Security Providers OpenDNS Unveil DNSCrypt For Windows

May 11, 2012
May 11, 2012 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – One of the world’s fastest-growing Internet security providers OpenDNS today announced a technology preview of DNSCrypt for the Windows operating system.

The DNSCrypt will initially be available for the Linux and Mac OS X operating systems, and is being touted as a revolutionary new technology. The DNSCrypt encrypts all DNS traffic between the internet user and OpenDNS, their DNS provider.

DNS is used every time a user views websites, sends emails or initiates an instant messaging conversation, along with many other online processes. This latest technology has come into place due to the underlying DNS protocol possessing certain weaknesses. OpenDNS developed DNSCrypt to address those particular weaknesses.

The main weakness is refered to as ‘The last mile’, a portion of the Internet connection between a computer and the DNS provider. This is particularly prominent in public places that provide WiFi networds, such as coffee shops and airports. This latest technology has been designed to solve these serious security concerns.

CEO of OpenDNS, David Ulevitch, explained the importance of tackling these problems.

“Security and privacy in our increasingly mobile world are among the most important problems to tackle today, and OpenDNS is in the perfect position as the world’s largest DNS and security provider to deliver this type of solution.”

DNSCrypt is significant due to the technology turning regular traffic into encrypted DNS traffic that can be secure from eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks. This is a unique system, which has the potential to be one of the most impactful advancements in internet security.
With Windows’ market share topping 80%, their version of DNSCrypt is poised to make an immediate and positive global impact on Internet security and user privacy.

“DNSCrypt for Windows is a necessary step in deploying DNSCrypt to a global audience. DNSCrypt’s immense value and significance is immediately apparent to everyone knowledgeable about Internet security and privacy. And the preview of DNSCrypt for the Windows operating system means its benefit is now afforded to the vast majority of Internet users,” said Ulevitch.
