Webnames.ca is celebrating 15 years in the industry. The company, which has headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, bills itself as “Canada's original and most experienced domain registrar”. The company founded the .CA domain in 1987 and has been Canadian owned since 2000. It caters to businesses of a range of sizes offering “the solutions they need to successfully operate their businesses online” with services that extend to web hosting, email, web design and SSL security solutions.
The .CA domain name was the brainchild of Webnames.ca’s co-founder John Demco. Between 1987 and 2000 100,000 .CA domain names were registered with Mr. Demco in charge. "I never imagined that the .CA domain would become so pervasive in our society,” he said recently. “When we started, there were only a few thousand computers on the Internet. I am impressed at how.CA has become such an important symbol of Canadian identity online." The extension was passed to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority in December 2000. The Authority is a non-profit entity responsible for “operating the domain in the interest of all Canadians”.
