Iron Mountain Digital, the technology arm of Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), has announced it will offer new .Tel domain names, it was reported recently. According to the company, the .Tel domain is “similar to an interactive business card on the web”.
A .Tel domain enables businesses and individuals to store, manage and display contact information and keywords in the Domain Name System (DNS). Large businesses with established domain names can use a .Tel domain to make finding their contact information easier.
Iron Mountain began registration and management services on December 3, 2008, the first day of the domain’s “sunrise period” reserved for trademark owners. The period ends February 2, 2009. The “first-come, first-served / land rush” phase of the launch will be from February 2 to March 23, 2009. During this period registration will be available to anyone. General availability registrations begin March 24, 2009.
Telnic Limited, the Registry Operator and Sponsoring Organization for .Tel, was awarded Top Level Domain (TLD) administration in 2006 by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
