Lycos Europe to Shut Down Key Activities

January 24, 2009
January 24, 2009 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Lycos Europe is to shut down Lycos Mail and Tripod, it was reported recently. Lycos Mail, an online email solution, and Tripod, a web hosting solution, will both be pulled on February 15, 2009. According to the company, the move comes after a “strategic review” which suggested the company should try to sell assets in both areas. The move only impacts Lycos Europe, a subsidiary of Lycos in the United States.

An email to customers informing them of the situation was short and to the point. "We regret having to take this step and we want to thank you for your confidence in the past," it read. "Currently, we are still working on finding a solution to provide you the service through another provider. If we should succeed in doing so, we will inform you within the next four weeks." The email was followed up with instructions on how to move websites to other services.

Lycos Europe is one of a number of companies impacted by the current economic downturn. Google’s well publicized “austerity drive” led to it shedding temporary staff – a fact that won’t go unnoticed in an environment where full-time contracted staff are not the norm. In addition, Microsoft recently announced it would shed 5000 staff globally.
