Future Hosting is recommending that its server users update their PHP versions as “PHP 5.6 and PHP 7 will not receive security updates after the end of 2018”. Future Hosting has global headquarters in Southfield, Michigan, United States. Established in 2001, the company’s services include traditional web hosting and dedicated servers, Hybrid Virtual Private Servers and Virtual Private Servers (VPS) options. Each of its services is underpinned by the company’s unique ‘3-hour Service Level Agreement’. As its customers often utilize PHP-based solutions like WordPress, WooCommerce, Joomla, Magento, and Drupal, its warning is timely.
PHP is an extremely popular common server-side software solution with an estimated 80% of all websites leveraging the solution. According to Future Hosting, servers running PHP 5.6 and PHP 7 “will not receive security updates after the end of 2018” and will therefore be unsupported. Unsupported versions of PHP will be vulnerable to threats discovered after support is withdrawn. PHP 5.6 is the most prominent PHP version and underpins 60% of all websites. PHP 5.6 will stop being supported on December 31, 2018 while PHP 7 stops being supported on December 3, 2018. “That means there will be no further work on either version. Bugs will not be fixed and security vulnerabilities will not be patched” suggested Future Hosting in a press release.
“As a server hosting provider, we host thousands of WordPress sites and other sites built on PHP and PHP frameworks,“ suggested Future Hosting’s Vice President of Operations, Maulesh Patel. “We’re concerned that a large percentage of the web will run on an unsupported platform. Bad actors will scrutinize PHP 5.6, and the vulnerabilities they discover will not be patched.”
