Microsoft has bought GreenButton, a New Zealand-based cloud computing company which leverages Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. Still officially a startup, GreenButton had previously partnered with Microsoft on cloud-based services and in 2011 the corporation invested $1 million in the company. News of the purchase was announced on the Windows Azure blog, but financial details were not released.
“GreenButton is a leading provider of integrated on-demand solutions that allow customers to manage compute-intensive workloads in the cloud”, suggested the corporation’s blog. “These solutions are known in the industry for their ease of use. Using GreenButton’s solutions, applications can be cloud-enabled quickly without recoding existing software – and without a PhD in computer science. As a result of today’s acquisition, we’ll be working to integrate those solutions with the Microsoft Azure platform, enabling customers to simply and easily solve complex problems, get more from their data and drive their business forward.”
Established in 2006, GreenButton is based in Wellington, New Zealand and has a presence in San Jose and Seattle, USA. It caters to customers that include Pixar and the US Department of Energy. GreenButton specializes in cloud solutions that offer technology which permits high levels of burstability. This allows customers to perform cloud-based big data analytics activities, saving them considerable investment costs.
GreenButton’s solutions will be absorbed into Microsoft Azure’s “Big Compute” team, but its staff will still be based in New Zealand.
