Microsoft Showcases Hyper-V Adoption at HostingCon 2008

July 30, 2008
July 30, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – HostingCon 2008 saw Microsoft showcase the rapid adoption if its new Hyper-V solution, it was reported yesterday. According to the company, the take up of Hyper-V since general availability underscores the platform’s status as “a leading virtualization technology for maximizing datacenter efficiency, scalability and manageability at a lower cost”.

Microsoft’s claims for Hyper-V include its ability to enable web hosting providers to “increase server efficiency and reduce many of the costs associated with running and managing datacenters by consolidating resources”. The solution allows Windows and Linux to run side-by-side on the same server “using a single management interface”. Already, four major web hosting providers - Layered Technologies, Hostbasket, SoftCom and SoftLayer - have adopted Hyper-V, while another 16 hosting providers are enrolled in Mircrosoft’s SQL Server 2008 Go Live program.

According to a Q&A on Microsoft PressPass with Microsoft Executive John Zanni, General Manager of Worldwide Hosting, “Hyper-V allows hosting providers to offer businesses a secure development, testing and staging environment, business continuity services and dedicated virtual private servers (VPS). Hyper-V also makes it easy for hosters to create offers for developers, giving them a secure application development environment at a competitive price point. As part of the Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition, Hyper-V also helps hosting providers reduce costs by allowing for unlimited virtual environments on a server for a predictable and low monthly licensing fee. Simplifying the migration process, Hyper-V also enables hosting providers to easily migrate existing physical servers to Hyper-V with only a few clicks of a mouse, minimizing time and associated costs”.
