Open Source Solutions Provider Red Hat to Acquire Cloud-Native Development Tools Provider Codenvy
Open Source (OS) solutions provider Red Hat is to acquire cloud-native development tools provider Codenvy. Established in 1993, Red Hat has headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Home of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system, the company’s services include software solutions for business and cloud application platform provision. While Red Hat has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Codenvy, financial details of the deal have yet to be released.

Codenvy, whose headquarters are in San Francisco, California, United States, provides a range of “cloud-native development tools” that allow developers to produce “container-based and cloud-native applications”. Established in 2013, the company has 50 employees and its partners include Microsoft, SAP, and, of course, Red Hat.

The addition of Codenvy’s offerings - including its Eclipse Che OS cloud Integrated Development Environment (IDE)) - to Red Hat’s suite of services underscores its efforts to “provide solutions that enable developers to create applications for hybrid cloud environments”. Red Hat will also bring Codenvy into its OpenShift.io hosted development environment and make Eclipse Che “central to its tooling strategy”.

"Thanks to the increasing push towards digital transformation and the use of technology platforms, including apps, as a strategic business advantage, the role of the developer has never been more important,” explained Codenvy’s CEO and founder, Tyler Jewell.“ Cloud workspaces make contributing to software projects easy. It’s a simple concept that drove growth in codenvy.io and open source Eclipse Che. Our container-based approach to development aligns with Red Hat’s focus on improving security features, reliability and performance in its container offerings. Joining Red Hat opens up opportunities to expand our reach among developers, giving them modern tools to build containerized apps from within their Web browser.”
