Oracle and Intel Refocus Relationship on the Cloud
Oracle and Intel have refocused their relationship on the cloud. The two companies have been in partnership for a number of years, but their latest efforts appear to be directed specifically at competing with IBM. A team comprising of Oracle and Intel engineers was set up under the name ‘Project Apollo’ and housed in Oregon, USA, close to Intel's facilities there. The two company’s engineers were briefed with determining how to establish large data centers that will utilize Oracle hardware and Intel chips.

The effort culminated in the companies approaching enterprises with a view to addressing their data center requirements using Oracle and Intel solutions. However, the effort has now been extended to focus on Oracle's database and software customers in a bid to encourage them to transition from IBM to servers driven by Oracle and Intel technology.

News of the renewed focus was announced by the CEO of Oracle Mark Hurd and the CEO of Intel Brian Krzanich at Oracle Open World, Oracle’s annual conference which started yesterday at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The event ends October 29, 2015.

Oracle's servers use its own ‘Sun Micrososystems’ chips, so it is essentially an Intel competitor. The collaboration is then seen as having IBM firmly in mind. Oracle caters to around 400,000 customers and, according to Mark Hurd, they currently have the opportunity to drive many of IBM’s customers to joint Oracle/Intel solutions.
