OVHcloud, the leading European cloud provider, proudly announces the opening of its newest data centre in Sydney, featuring cutting-edge water cooling technology. This new facility, the most sustainable data centre in Australia to date, follows recent expansions in India and Singapore over the past 14 months. The Sydney launch adds to OVHcloud's network of six data centres across the Asia Pacific region, delivering open, trusted, and sovereign cloud solutions for businesses seeking to grow in this area.
The new data centre deploys OVHcloud’s proprietary water cooling technology, which is specifically designed to handle mission-critical workloads efficiently. This advanced system ensures the growing demand for high-performance cloud solutions is met sustainably, driven by the widespread adoption of emerging technologies. The global cloud services market is projected to reach US$2.5 trillion by 2031. To cater to this demand, OVHcloud introduces its high-performance Scale dedicated servers, powered by the latest AMD and Intel processors, to the Australian market for the first time, enhancing access to innovation and performance.
Michel Paulin, Chief Executive Officer of OVHcloud, stated, “The rising popularity of technologies such as 5G, edge computing, and generative AI has increased the demand for high computing performance. However, many organisations face challenges in balancing this need while considering their carbon footprints. With over 20 years of pioneering water cooling technology, we are equipped to help businesses achieve their operational and ESG goals.”
The new data centre in Sydney features an integrated water cooling system within a vertical rack design, enabling cooling at the server level and eliminating the need for traditional air conditioning in server rooms. This system not only reduces costs and environmental impact but also provides precise and efficient cooling, requiring only a single glass of water to cool an OVHcloud server through a closed-loop system.
These innovations have enabled OVHcloud to achieve impressive sustainability metrics, including a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) as low as 1.29 and a WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) of 0.30 l/kWh, both significantly below industry averages. By manufacturing its own racks and servers, OVHcloud has developed an integrated industrial model with a CUE (Carbon Usage Effectiveness) of 0.18.
Terry Maiolo, Vice President and General Manager of OVHcloud APAC, expressed, “We are thrilled to introduce our latest data centre technology to Sydney. This facility deploys water cooling at scale, supporting a sustainable cloud by design. Given Australia’s dense concentration of data centres per capita, this development is crucial for Australian businesses as they increasingly prioritise the sustainability of their data centre operations.”
