R1Soft Releases Near-Continuous Backup Product for MySQL

July 11, 2007
July 11, 2007 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – R1Soft (http://www.r1soft.com), a developer of near-continuous data protection products for Linux and Windows, today announced the release of its sought-after MySQL data protection add-on module, designed to support large or frequently changing databases that cannot tolerate downtime or performance decreases during backups.

The new module was initially announced in March, 2007. R1Soft becomes the first to offer such a data protection product for MySQL databases, which generally store transaction-based data that changes frequently. Because of these constant changes, legacy data protection solutions, such as tape backups, or free utilities like mysqlhotcopy, face many drawbacks, including their inability to store numerous point-in-time snapshots and their demands on system resources.

“There are over 10 million active MySQL deployments and almost every one of these systems needs a hot backup utility that does not interrupt continuous transactions. With our product, we are able to use a granular approach, allowing databases to be backed up as often as four or five times an hour. By using our kernel level near-Continuous Data Protection system for Linux, we are able to provide consistent point-in-time backups for MySQL without any downtime to the database,” said David Wartell, R1Soft founder and CEO.

The module is available as a premium add-on to R1Soft’s flagship CDP Server product, providing data protection on both Linux and Windows platforms. Features of the module include the ability to execute Bare-Metal restorations for an entire MySQL Server, as well as the ability to back up busy MySQL Servers without interruptions. The module also provides an easy to use Web interface, designed for both server administrators and end users.

R1Soft’s CDP products diverge significantly from traditional backup technologies, which essentially copy files at intervals from hard disks to another medium, such as a tape drive. These methods only provide data protection on a daily or weekly basis, resulting in large losses of data in the event of a disaster. R1Soft’s CDP Server, however, monitors changes to the disk as they happen, thereby reducing backup windows to seconds or minutes. It also affords even busy servers a significantly higher level of reliability in the event of a disaster, without the consumption of a large amount of system resources.
