Russian News Agency Telecom Daily Reports Plans to Build Nuclear Powered Data Center
A report by engadget has quoted the Russian news agency Telecom Daily as reporting plans to build a nuclear powered data center at the nuclear-powered Kalinin power station near Moscow. The center, which will be the largest data center in Russia, is to be built by the Rosenergoatom power company.

The data center will house around 10,000 server racks and need 80 MW of power to operate. This power will be provided by the power station. The center is likely to cost around $975 million to construct, not including ”IT buildout”. The bulk of the racks will be leased by commercial customers with only 10% utilized by Rosenergoatom.

Russia has very strict laws regarding data protection and Russian data must remain on servers on Russian soil. As a result, there is a considerable domestic demand for data center services and web hosting within Russia. The new data center is likely to be a response to that demand. According to the report, the company behind the project has already contacted Google and Facebook to offer them storage space at the new center.
