Facebook has announced it is to open a new office in the British capital, London. Facebook, which has headquarters in Menlo Park, California, United States, is the undisputed social media leader with 2.07 billion monthly active users in the third quarter of 2017. The new office will be completed in 2018 and add 800 new jobs to the UK workforce, bringing Facebook’s UK headcount to 2,300 staff.
The move underscores Facebook’s commitment to the UK, and launch of the new office will coincide with its tenth year operating in the country. Known as LDN-LAB and located in the King’s Cross part of London, the new office will be home to marketing and sales staff and Facebook’s engineers and developers. It will also be home to a number of UK startups who will take part in three month-long programs that will give them access to Facebook’s expertise.
The UK’s Chancellor Philip Hammond suggested that Facebook's move showed that, “The UK is not only the best place to start a new business, it's also the best place to grow one". The UK’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook’s vice-president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as suggesting, “Today’s announcements show that Facebook is more committed than ever to the UK and in supporting the growth of the country’s innovative start-ups. This country has been a huge part of Facebook’s story over the past decade.”
