Swiss Web Hosting Provider Hostpoint Announces Launch of ‘.swiss’ Domain Name Registrations
Swiss web hosting provider Hostpoint has announced the launch of ‘.swiss’ domain name registrations. The company, whose registered office is in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland, is recognized as the “largest web hosting provider in Switzerland”. It caters for around 200,000 websites and has registered around 280,000 domain names. Hostpoint’s customers include a range of key Swiss companies and it is the ‘”official registrar” for the new domains.

Hostpoint is the only ICANN-accredited domain name provider in Switzerland and the company is billing the new ‘.swiss’ domain name as the “exclusive Internet addresses for Swiss organizations”. The ‘Sunrise Period’ for the domain started recently and will continue until November 9, 2015. During this time Swiss “trademark owners, companies and public-sector bodies” with a “a clear connection to Switzerland” are able to register relevant ‘.swiss’ domain names. Hostpoint has already submitted several applications on behalf of its clients. Companies wishing to register ‘.swiss’ domains must have a registered office in Switzerland.

‘.swiss’ domains will be available to the general public from January 11, 2016 and Hostpoint is pre-ordering domains to increase its customers’ chances of registering the domains names they require. The cost of registration is CHF 120 (US$ 122.42) including VAT for a year’s registration, but Hostpoint’s customers are only charged should their registration prove successful.
