Umbraco, the leading open-source content management system (CMS) built on the .NET platform, has expanded its global hosting capabilities by launching a new regional hosting option in Microsoft Azure’s Central Canada region. The addition enables Umbraco Cloud customers to host websites and digital services geographically closer to Canadian users while meeting local data residency requirements.
The new Canadian hosting option, located in Toronto, is designed to support organisations that must comply with federal, provincial, or public sector data regulations that prohibit storing or processing data outside of Canada. With this update, customers can now select from the following hosting regions for their Umbraco Cloud projects: Central Canada, West Europe, East US, South UK, and East Australia.
“Companies operating in Canada are subject to strict privacy laws governing how citizen data is handled,” said Mats Persson, CEO of Umbraco. “By offering a hosting option in Canada, we’re enabling our partners and clients to comply with those legal requirements while delivering fast, secure, and reliable digital experiences.”
Umbraco’s managed cloud infrastructure includes 24/7 monitoring, automatic patching, and one-click upgrades, allowing developers to focus on building and delivering content-rich digital solutions without the overhead of server maintenance.
The announcement has been well received by Umbraco’s Canadian partners.
“This is a game changer for Canadian organizations,” said Amy Yu, President of Kickbyte Digital, an Umbraco Gold Partner based in Edmonton. “It’s especially important for public sector clients who require locally hosted solutions to ensure data sovereignty and regulatory compliance.”
David Taylor, Partner at Versive, a Toronto-based digital agency working with healthcare clients, added: “Canadian privacy laws are particularly stringent when it comes to health data. Having a secure, compliant hosting option within Canada helps us serve our clients more effectively while improving website performance for users across the country.”
“Hosting content closer to users not only improves speed and reliability,” noted Filip Bech-Larsen, CTO of Umbraco, “but also reduces the energy footprint of data transfers. This new region supports our mission to deliver secure, sustainable, and high-performing websites to users everywhere.”
