The US Air Force has adopted the Office 365 cloud-based communication and collaboration solution in a three-year deal with
Microsoft. The "Microsoft Cloud for Government" solution has been specially modified for Department of Defense (DoD) usage and over 100,000 users will benefit from its adoption. The DoD has awarded contracts to Microsoft, Dell and General Dynamics to facilitate the migration.
Office 365 is a collection of software and subscriptions to services that provide access to a range of solutions that were formerly offered through direct software ownership rather than subscriptions. Alongside e-mail it includes OneDrive, Skype, Lync, SharePoint and integration with Yammer.
The DoD's version of the solution meets its rigorous security needs and is in line with the organizations best practice. It provides e-mail and calendaring tools alongside Skype for Business. With what is one of the DoD's largest ever cloud migrations, the Air Force aims to increase efficiency, improve communications, and reduce costs through a highly secure cloud platform.
