US Air Force Awards $2 Million to University of Illinois in Pursuit of Secure Cloud
The US Air Force has awarded $2 million to the University of Illinois in pursuit of a secure cloud computing platform. The funding was granted to the university’s Assured Cloud Computing University Center of Excellence (ACC-UCoE) by the Air Force’s Research Laboratory (AFRL). The center, which is dedicated to establishing secure cloud computing (with a focus on ensuring the “confidentiality and integrity” of data and communications) was originally setup in 2011 with a $4 million investment from AFRL and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

The university’s research has focused on improving NoSQL database functionality through the development of advanced scheduling algorithms to enhance cloud infrastructures. The research has specifically increased database speeds. The recent investment allows the university to establish new approaches to real-time cloud-based streaming and employing software-defined networking in cloud systems.

“In the last four years, we’ve established that you could build mission-critical cloud computing elements, that you could deliver real-time results to secure the cloud, and that you can make the cloud reliable,” explained center leader Professor Roy Campbell on the University of Illinois’ Department of Computer Science website. “In the last four years, we’ve established that you could build mission-critical cloud computing elements, that you could deliver real-time results to secure the cloud and that you can make the cloud reliable”.
