VMware Helps Move Customers Using SAP Solutions to Virtualized Environments with HP Converged Infrastructure

June 3, 2011
June 3, 2011 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – VMware, Inc., (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced the availability of solutions that will enable customers using SAP solutions to easily migrate to virtualized infrastructure powered by VMware and HP technologies. These solutions, which include HP reference architectures for use with SAP solutions, are designed to increase agility, performance and scalability of running SAP applications while reducing capital and operating costs - helping customers accelerate their journey to the cloud.

Customers looking to refresh their current hardware, migrate from proprietary platforms or deploy SAP solutions for the first time can benefit from virtualizing SAP solutions on the VMware platform, increasing availability of SAP applications and supporting key business processes more efficiently.

”Virtualization delivers the benefits of cloud computing to existing legacy applications by providing dynamic scalability, built-in high availability, provisioning in minutes and automated disaster recovery at the infrastructure level,” said Gary Green, vice president, Global Strategic Alliances, VMware. “Working with HP and SAP AG, we are helping customers virtualize their business-critical applications to create dynamic datacenters that can deliver IT as a Service.”

“Organizations that run SAP applications expect their data to be secure and always available,” said Paul Miller, vice president, Solutions and Strategic Alliances, Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking, HP. “The HP reference architecture for use with SAP software integrates VMware vSphere together with HP Converged Infrastructure, enabling organizations to move their high-priority business applications onto virtual machines securely.”

SGL Group Takes Advantage of VMware and HP Solutions

SGL Group, a leading global manufacturer of carbon-based products, had a corporate requirement to consolidate its implementation of the SAP Supplier Relationship Management (SAP SRM) application in its U.S. operations onto a virtualized platform using VMware vSphere, as well as migrate the SAP SRM systems to a standardized SAP application stack based on IBM DB2 database software and the Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system. Consequently, a new virtual Vertex (Sales-and-use-Tax server application for use with SAP solutions) landscape had to be implemented, as Vertex is not supported on DB2. SGL turned to VMware partner Texperts, Inc. for help.

“The implementation took exactly three months and we’ve already lowered overall support and operational costs for the underlying hardware and software,” said Marshall Munyak, manager of technical applications, North America corporate business systems, SGL Group. “We were able to consolidate from three SAP instances to two, so we’re now faster and more scalable, flexible and efficient. Performance of SAP solutions improved dramatically. Our IT support team has been receiving positive feedback from end users regarding an overall improved system response. VMware and HP, together with the expertise provided by Texperts, were key to our success.”

“Leveraging VMware and HP solutions, we assisted SGL Group, as their virtualization consulting partner, to create an updated system that has been integrated into a corporate-wide standard platform,” said Gerhard Saumweber, CEO of Texperts, Inc., a joint VMware and HP solution provider. “Our customers that have taken advantage of this offering are maximizing infrastructure efficiency while cutting CAPEX by up to 70 percent.”
