Squarespace has launched a new domain registration service. Squarespace, which has headquarters in New York, United States, was established in 2004. The company prides itself on providing “creative tools that power the future of the web”. The company’s range of web design/CMS tools “set new standards for online publishing”. Squarespace’s fully-hosted solutions offer a do-it-yourself approach to website development that can be used by complete beginners or to build complex corporate websites. Squarespace Domains represents the company’s first move into the domain registration arena.
The move to launch Squarespace Domains comes on the heels of the company’s recent launch of Squarespace Commerce and Cover Pages in November 2015. It also underscores its expansion strategy.
Squarespace Domains gives users access to domains with a range of suffixes including new top-level domains such as ‘.camera’ and ‘.pizza’. Once a domain name has been purchased, users can ‘upgrade’ and have access to the company’s website development solutions and obtain a Google Apps account which offers email addresses which include users’ domain names. Once an upgrade has taken place no additional configuration is required.
Squarespace Domains also offers users a “WHOIS Privacy” feature which is available free of charge. This means that personal data usually available through WHOIS searches is hidden from the public. Other registrars often charge for such a service. In addition, Squarespace Domains ensures “transparency in the fee structure”, meaning domains can be renewed at their original prices.
