WordPress Digital Experience Platform WP Engine Announces PHP 7 Availability
WordPress digital experience platform WP Engine has announced the availability of PHP 7 on its servers. With global headquarters in Austin, Texas, United States, WP Engine was established in 2010 and has offices in San Francisco, California, San Antonio, Texas, United States, and in London, United Kingdom, and Limerick, Ireland. The company specializes in managed services tailored to WordPress websites and applications.

An Open Source (OS) solution, WordPress is available free of charge and is the internet’s leading Content Management System (CMS). Underpinning 25% or more of websites currently online, WordPress benefits from the support of an extensive community that develops commercial and non-commercial themes that allows users to change the look, feel and functionality of websites. PHP 7 will be available to all WP Engine’s WordPress customers, regardless of package.

PHP is the web development language favored by millions of coders around the world. At present, PHP underpins 84% of internet activity. PHP 7 is the latest iteration of the software. It reduces memory consumption to increase site loading speeds. As far as WordPress sites are concerned, it can perform “as much as two to three times faster versus prior versions”, enhancing website SEO. In addition, PHP 7 manages “three times as many requests per second” and therefore deals with spikes in traffic without the requirement of additional server resources. It is offered as an “easy upgrade” for all 60,000 WP Engine customers, existing and new.

“As of February 2017, only 6.2 percent of the WordPress community have upgraded to PHP 7,” said Jason Cohen, CTO of WP Engine. "We've made it easy to test site-readiness for PHP 7 with our compatibility checker plugin, so now it’s incredibly easy for anyone on our platform to upgrade to PHP 7. We are delivering on our performance promise for faster WordPress applications that improve customers’ digital experiences, whether small business, big brand or agency.”
