AIT Dams the Security Breach

September 3, 2004
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - Every year, billions of dollars are compromised because of security flaws; some attacks are malicious, other problems are the result of carelessness.

* An employee gets local area network log-ins of other employees, and steals customer lists and information to sell to the company’s competitors.

AIT, Inc. (http://ait.com) now offers security scans for managed dedicated hosting customers, auditing servers for potential breaches and then providing information on available patches or service packs. “This works like a hacker does, checking for the weak spots and holes an intruder looks to find,” said Clarence Briggs, Chief Executive Officer of AIT. “Every system will have vulnerabilities but they are only weaknesses if they can be found and exploited. Our aim is to provide a prevention mechanism.”

* A hacker gets root access on a company’s web server and redirects client traffic to a mock site, collecting credit card information by mimicking the company’s electronic order form, then using that information to place large orders and ship them to various destinations for pay.

Weak points are going to exist in virtually every system; AIT’s Security Scan works to find them before someone with malicious intent does. Servers are scanned to root out passwords that are not well concealed, missing patches, and other potential holes so users can take pro-active action like shutting down unnecessary ports, checking permissions, or deleting unused accounts. “Technology is a double-edged sword,” said Briggs. “The demand is for systems with greater functionality for greater numbers of users, but as technologies become more integrated, their individual vulnerabilities become more pronounced.”

* A student uses a university network from which to launch denial of service attacks against a company shutting down its external Internet capability. AIT also provides a per-incident support service whereby the company’s systems administration staff will install patches for customers who are not comfortable doing it themselves.
