InMotion Hosting has announced the successful deployment of TCMalloc, Google’s high-performance memory allocation system, across its entire shared hosting infrastructure. The upgrade is designed to improve database stability, reduce memory-related crashes, and deliver more consistent website performance for customers without requiring any configuration changes.

The rollout replaces the default Linux memory allocator commonly used on servers and addresses a long-standing issue affecting MySQL and MariaDB database environments across the hosting industry.

Improving Memory Management at the Infrastructure Level

Every Linux server relies on a memory allocator to manage how applications use and release memory during operation. Most systems use the default glibc malloc allocator, which can struggle under sustained database workloads by retaining memory longer than necessary. Over time, this can lead to excessive memory consumption and server instability.

TCMalloc, originally developed by Google for large-scale production environments, manages memory more efficiently and returns unused memory to the operating system more predictably. According to InMotion Hosting, this significantly improves stability for high-demand database applications running continuously on shared hosting servers.

Addressing a Common Industry Problem
Shared hosting servers often run database services for hundreds of websites simultaneously, including WordPress sites, ecommerce stores, and SaaS applications. As memory usage gradually increased over time, servers could eventually exceed safe memory limits, triggering crashes and temporary service interruptions.

Following the deployment, the company monitored server performance over a two-week period and observed fully stabilized memory usage across affected systems.

According to InMotion Hosting, the infrastructure upgrade delivered substantial improvements throughout its shared hosting environment. MariaDB memory usage reportedly decreased by more than 50% overall, while some high-load servers experienced average reductions of up to 77%.
